Back in early 2003, Lillix released their first single “It’s About Time” off their debut album, which quickly catapulted them into pop music spotlight. They also covered The Romantic’s “What I Like About You” for the Freaky Friday soundtrack. And for the record, the only affiliation they had with Lindsay Lohan was solely for the music video and no actual friendship stemmed off of that meeting. The aforementioned songs are the two that most people associate when they think of Lillix.

Fast-forward to 2009, it’s obvious that much has changed with the band in the past six years.  The band released their sophomore release in August 2006, “Inside The Hollow”, despite the fact that their label had unfolded. Shortly afterwards, Lillix went on a break. Through the series of these events, the thing that was most disappointing was the fact “Inside The Hollow” deserved more recognition, as it was a great stepping-stone for the band.

With their debut album, Lillix was always misconstrued as a group of carbon copies of a famous pop-punk Canadian female singer, but their sophomore effort showed otherwise. Jeff Saltzman produced “Inside The Hollow”, and all of the tracks were entirely written or co-written by Lillix (at the time Tasha-Ray Evin, Lacey-Lee Evin, and former bassist Louise Burns).  “Sweet Temptation” was the first and only single, and only represented a small part of what they had to offer to the music world. Highly recommended on checking this album out.

Though the band has gone through a few line-up changes, the core always remained with the Evin sisters, and their dedication to the group shows. With the addition of drummer Eric Hoodicoff and guitarist Britt Black, Lillix is back. Yes, it is true: Lillx is no longer an all-girl band, but on the bright side of things, Eric is a great drummer. Not only have they been playing a few shows around British Columbia in the past year or so, but also are about to start production on a new album. Their new single “Dance Alone” has recently been added to Virgin 95.3 radio here in Vancouver.

Personally, I find it hard to truly like a band until I see them live. And even when it comes to that point, performing live is make or break in my eyes. This is what I like about Lillix (ha, sorry, bad joke!). This past weekend, the band played at Simon Fraser University for the CLAN kickoff, and had nothing short of a solid performance. Poised and confident, their combined stage experience will only keep them going longer in the long run.

So if you don’t know or remember who Lillix is, that’s ok, check them out now. If you remember Lillix as a ‘fake pop-punk’ band, take a page from the real world and throw those high-school stereotypes away— take another listen.
